Books on Evenings with Robbie Buck – October 18

Here are the books I discussed with Robbie Buck on 702 Sydney on Tuesday October 18:

This is Laura Lippman at her best. Five friends growing up in Baltimore in the 70s seem inseparable, until they must each keep a dark secret. Thirty years later they all meet up again following the death of one them. Are they ready to discuss what happened all those years ago? And is the secret they’ve been keeping really the truth? This book centres on an unusual love triangle the focal point of which is Madeleine, an English Major at Brown University. We also meet Mitchell, a Religious Studies Major, who fell instantly in love with Madeleine the first day he met her and secretly believes he will marry her one day. Completing the triangle is Leonard, a character that would not be out-of-place in a Richard Yates novel. This amazing novel is an exploration of not only love and relationships but spirituality and madness as well as individualism and companionship. A fabulous read from the Pulitzer Prize winning author of Middlesex. Read my full review here

Set in 1960s North Carolina in a small mountain town the story centers on Luce who is the caretaker of a rundown lodge outside of town. She has withdrawn herself from the world. However when her estranged sister is murdered she must look after her sister’s troubled young. When her sister’s husband, Bud, is acquitted of her, despite his obvious guilt, he sets out to track the twins down. In another writer’s hands this could be a fast-paced, crime-thriller but with Frazier it is a different book entirely. It is an intense character study set amongst a vivid and unforgiving landscape. When her baby brother is stolen by a murder of crows Prue must venture into the “Impassable Wilderness” to rescue him. Wildwood is a spellbinding tale full of wonder, danger and mystery that will be especially loved by fans of the Chronicles of Narnia
