Derek B. Miller’s AMERICAN BY DAY
Norwegian By Night was an absolutely amazing book. A thriller like no other. Now Derek B. Miller has written a stand alone sequel just as good if not better.
American By Day takes place just weeks after the events of Norwegian By Night however you don’t have to have read the previous book (although you do because it is an amazing book). Norwegian Chief Inspector Sigrid Ødegård is coming to terms with the outcomes of that novel and the role she played. She takes a leave of absence from her job and returns home to her family’s farm only to discover her brother Marcus has gone missing in America. A child has been shot and killed by police, a woman has died and local police believe Marcus is involved in her death. Especially as he has now gone missing. Sigrid arrives in upstate New York to find out what is going on. A stranger in a strange land she must navigate the local (and national) politics to find her brother before it is too late.
This is a novel of contradictions. It is wildly funny but deadly serious. It is flippant and thought-provoking. It is action packed and philosophical. It is a slow burn yet also fast paced. It is all these contradictions and more. After all it is a novel about America. Derek Miller cuts to the heart of what it means to be American and everything that is right and wrong with that concept. At the same time he has written a timely and heartfelt novel about loss, losing and being lost.
Set against the backdrop of Barack Obama’s election in 2008 this is at once a thrilling mystery whilst also being one of the most insightful novels about America in recent memory. Derek B. Miller is a writer like no other.
