Jake Arnott’s THE HOUSE OF RUMOUR

The book opens with an intricate plot by the British to exploit the mystical and occult beliefs of the Nazis. At the same time science fiction writing is being heavily influenced by the rise of Nazism. A burgeoning science fiction salon is exploring these themes as writers not only try to warn the world of the drastic possibilities a German victory could present but also search for answers and hope in a world at war.

The war also makes a lot of science fiction before the war, science fact. As the Second World War ends and the Cold War begins we see the metamorphosis of science fiction from Nazi dystopias into UFOs and alien visitors. And again the subjects and themes of these stories are used for propaganda, not just by governments but new religions.

Part spy thriller, part cultural journey this novel weaves together a story of war and deception, scientific imagination and achievement and the unquenchable need for stories and answers and how all of these things can be manipulated. Ian Fleming, L. Ron Hubbard and Rudolph Hess revolve in and out of the story where fact and fiction are both interchangeable, indeterminable and inescapable.
