Johann Hari’s CHASING THE SCREAM
By telling the story of how the War on Drugs began Hari shows how the groundwork was laid on both sides of the drug war to make it last the next 80 years. The lies and misconceptions told about drugs and their users to justify their prohibition have had long-lasting and devastating effects and the methods employed by those to protect the supply of drugs has escalated into truly horrifying outcomes around the world.
Hari looks at all sides of the drug war showing that there is in fact two wars: the war on drugs and the war for drugs. He also examines addiction and how the chemical component is only one part of addiction and the psychological component is much stronger and often overlooked. Hari examines the pros and cons of lifting the prohibition on drugs. He looks at how other countries and regions around the world have attempted to do this and the pitfalls and benefits of each different system of decriminalizing drugs. By no means does Johann Hari try to give us a roadmap on how to solve the drug problem but instead clearly presents the myriad of good and bad ideas that human society has tried to employ to tackle the “drug problem” over the last century. By laying all these efforts out (and their intended and unintended consequences) a way forward appears to be achievable.
This is an absorbing and engaging look at the so-called War on (and for) Drugs. No matter what your preconceived ideas are about drugs, their use and addiction this book will give you a new perspective and even change your mind on certain issues.
