Max Barry’s COMPANY

After reading and loving Max Barry’s forthcoming novel Lexicon I knew I had to go back and read his other books and am so glad I did. Barry is such a fun, smart and incisive writer and deserves to be more widely recognized in Australian literary circles.

Company is an absurdist satire of the corporate business world worthy of comparisons with Catch-22. We follow Jones (he goes by his surname because first names are distracting and create inefficiencies) a new recruit at Zephyr Holdings. Jones is a sales assistant in Training Sales but quickly realizes there is something not quite right about the company he is working for. When he tries to find out what exactly Zephyr Holding does he opens a pandora’s box that will force him to make some dramatic choices.

Barry sticks the knife into the corporate mentality and management speak that is the bane of every office worker and mantra of every office manager. He jumps from the absurd to the all-too-true with ease and skill. This is a must read for anyone that’s had an office job and a hilarious reaffirmation for those of us luckily enough to escape its clutches. I can’t wait to read more from a super talent and uber-clever Australian writer who I wished I discovered much sooner.
