My Year in Reading – 2016
For the last couple of years I have been tracking my reading via author gender, book format, genre and author nationality. So here are my results from 2016:
In 2016 I read 65 books. This is down on the last couple of years which surprised me as both my kids were in school this year and I had my weekends back for the first time in 3 or 4 years. But instead of giving me more time to read it looks like it was less. Although I did not get on as big a roll with great books as I have done in previous years and I reckon I didn’t finish more books than ever this year too. My author gender ratio dropped this year as well with the female authors I read dropping from 35% down to almost 28%.
The big change in my reading this year was formats. The last two years I had read 19% and 16% eBooks where as this year it was 3%. And I only read those eBooks because I was forced to through advance reading copy availability. I consciously avoided eBooks this year. Partly because my bookshop no longer sells them but mainly because I find I’m not immersed in an eBook as much as a print book. I am more easily distracted when reading an eBook and frankly my preferred format is print (although audio won my format wars through the fact I drive 3 hours a day).
Fiction was again my dominant reading subject with literary fiction just outweighing crime fiction and my science fiction reading holding steady. I read hardly any non fiction in 2016 and now both my kids are reading I read hardly any kids books either.
After my Australia reading had dropped to a paltry 5% in 2015 18% of my reading in 2016 was from Australian authors, matching my British reading. My American reading still dominated which can be blamed on my high crime genre reading which is mostly American. I will be interested to see if American authors still dominate in 2017.
I can’t wait to see what 2017 brings. There seem to be some amazing new books on the horizon including the long-awaited Hilary Mantel although I have to say some of the early big name releases for the year have failed miserably to meet my expectations so maybe 2017 will be the year of some hidden gems. Let’s see!
